Stuart Briscoe
Genesis 44

Relationships in Joseph's family were sadly in need of repair. On the surface it appears that he was making matters worse, but he was forcing the brothers to face up to the seriousness of the problem. Deep-rooted relational problems sel¬dom yield to superficial solutions.

I. Relationships Must Be Evaluated Realistically.

A. In light of what they are designed to provide.
1. Loving protection from need, danger, and evil.

2. Loving inspection to identify factors that would hinder, mar, or destroy.

3. Loving correction designed to assist, develop, and mature.

B. In light of what can go wrong.
1. Deficient actions-failure to provide.

2. Destructive attitudes-resentment, anger, intrusiveness, censoriousness.

C. In light of what they are doing to all involved.

II. Responsibility Must Be Accepted Individually.

A. Avoid the tactic of generalization; Judah steps forward personally.

B. Avoid the tactic of evasion; Judah rejects opportunity to abandon Benjamin.
