When Paul said, "The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God" (Galatians 2:20), he outlined a basic principle of Christian experience, which needs to be understood.

I. Faith as a Principle.

A. The natural principle.
1. Creaturely dependence.
2. Creaturely interdependence.

B. The spiritual principle.
1. Faith as the principle of justification. Romans 3:28
a. The impossibility of the alternatives.
b. The possibilities of the reality.

2. Faith as the principle of living.
a. We live by faith. Romans 1:17
b. We walk by faith. 2 Corinthians 5:7
c. We stand by faith. 2 Corinthians 1:24
d. We pray by faith. James 5:15
e. We conquer by faith. 1 John 5:4


Part 4: Handling Temptation

Modern man thinks of "temptation" as a "seduction", but the term when used in the Bible means "to put a person to the test", whether benevolently-to show his qualities or malevolently-to expose his weaknesses. We need a biblical view of temptation.

I. Temptation Needs to Be Understood.

A. Its origins.
1. God puts His people to the test.
a. To reveal their true condition. Genesis 22:1-2
b. To purify their faith. 1 Peter 1:6-7
c. To produce character. James 1:2-4
d. To assure them of His love. Romans 5:3ff

2. Satan tempts God's people.
a. By crushing them. Job 1:11ff
b. By encouraging wrong satisfaction of valid desires.
c. By making them complacent and careless. Galatians 6:1
d. By misrepresenting God. Matthew 4:5ff

B. Its potential.
1. Opportunity to go wrong or do right.
