Known - Galatians Ch. 5 (5 of 7)
Last week we looked at Galatians 2:20-21 as our focus, and spent time coming to grips with the idea that it is Christ that lives in us. It is he whose life is now primary and of greatest importance on a daily or moment by moment ba-sis. We are dead, therefore sin doesn't have a hold on us anymore!
In the chapters that followed, 3 and 4 both have extensive arguments from the history of Israel and the law that prove Paul's point that reducing oneself to following the law after accepting Christ would be foolish. It would be akin to returning to weakness. Remember, Paul is trained in being a lawyer, so his arguments are quite compelling for his original audience. We are going to jump to chapter 5, not that 3 and 4 don't have good material, it's just that 5 and 6 both have strong application that I want to focus on in the remaining 3 weeks of this series.
Chapter 5 continues on the heels of 4, and in fact the first verse of 5 perhaps belongs in Chapter 4 (remember, the original didn't have chapter and verse. These were added much much later). Paul is finishing up an argument about Hagar and Sarah, one a slave woman, the other the free woman (Sarah). His conclusion is that, by faith, we are children of the free woman rather than the slave, through Christ! So he continues on in his thought:
Galatians 5:1 Christ has liberated us into freedom. Therefore stand firm and don't submit again to a yoke of slavery. 2 Take note! I, Paul, tell you that if you get circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all. 3 Again I testify to every man who gets circumcised that he is obligated to keep the entire law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace! 5 For by the Spirit we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness from faith. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision accomplishes anything; what ...
