In studying this section of verses, the conclusion can quickly be drawn that these church members, that James was addressing, were either blind or very shortsighted . At any rate, they lacked a personality trait that is still lacking to a large degree today. That wonderful, problem solving and disaster averting quality is called fore sight. My mother called the lack of it, "not being able to see your hand in front of your face". Now, while this scene may seem unbelievable, it will only take a few years as a pastor to figure out that not only is this practice believable, but it is a common thing today. This scenario would have easily made the front pages of Ripley's "Believe it or not". Another phrase commonly used today will definitely fit this situation, that of "what in the world were you thinking"? And the, of course, there is the one phrase that fits this situation best, that of "have you received a blow to the head lately"? I have also realized, after many painful attempts, that the only approach to solving this problem, is the direct and head on approach. James wastes no time with formalities or trying to be politically correct, he just comes right out and tells them that they are guilty. He doesn't use tact, nor is he worried about being diplomatic. He knows that this sinful practice has to cease, and he was the one chosen by the Lord to see to the task. I have found that nothing works better than to just tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This method is exactly what James is utilizing. Souls were at stake, ...
