The Gift of Exuberant Joy

2 Corinthians 8

How do you measure a church? A church is a spiritual and material entity whose mission is to love God, to love each other, to learn and obey the word of God, to commit our lives, our talents, our resources to the task of telling as many as we can about the love of God in Christ Jesus. It's hard to measure effectiveness in doing that. It's like looking at the railroad track to see which way the train went.

In 2 Corinthians 8:7, there is a measuring stick of spirituality. The apostle is saying to the church at Corinth, "But just as you excel in everything -", and he lays out the ways they need to excel. In knowledge, learning the word of God; we need to know what God's word says. In complete earnestness; that has to do with doing and obeying the will of God. He said: "Life, death, hell and worlds unknown may hang on the preaching and hearing of one sermon." There is a complete earnestness about the thing we are all doing. In love for us. "We will love each other. it Jesus said: "A new commandment I give to you that you love one another." Then he said: "Excel also in the grace of giving." We will commit our talents, our resources to the task of telling as many as we can.
