Do you know the name Colin Kaepernick? The former NFL Quarterback for the San Francisco 49ners made headlines in 2016 for sitting or taking a knee as the National Anthem played. Weeks' later, other athletes followed suit in solidarity.
Kaepernick soon found out that disrespecting the American flag was a bad idea! He still cannot land a job in the NFL. The American Flag is a symbol of our national pride and values. Every time the American flag is raised during the Olympic Games while our National Anthem is played, it moves me emotionally.
Our flag unifies us as Americans. It motivates us to victory. It's a visual reminder of the sacrifice made by soldiers and the strength of our resolve. Armies are led by it! Old Glory inspires us to achieve and survive.
Now as we continue our study of the names of God, we're going to find in Exodus 17 that the children of Israel found inspiration and motivation in an unusual flag that they called a banner. Just a glance at it pushed them through the challenge of Amalek and his troops and helped bring them to victory!
In fact, we're going to read that the victory over Amalek led Moses, according to Exodus 17.15, '' to built and altar and called the name, ''The-LORD-Is-My-Banner'' or Jehvoah Nissi.
To get the the full impact of this name Jehovah Nissi, let's back up to chapter 16 and beginning reading in a minute at verse 12. Now let me remind you that in chapter 14 God opens the Red Sea to the children of Israel. In chapter 15 they are singing praises to the LORD for what He's done. Then in chapter 15.22 after going into the desert for three days, they get thirsty; Moses cries to God and is instructed to throw a tree into the biter waters of Marah, which he did, and the bitter waters turned sweet.
