Preparing for Your Thanksgiving Service

by SermonSearch Staff

Thankfulness, or the act of being thankful, might seem like an easy concept to consider, to teach, to encourage, or even to do, but it may not always be so simple. Sometimes the idea of thankfulness can actually be daunting. Sometimes we get so caught up being selfish, complaint-filled, or even just stressed with our current life situations (and maybe even rightfully so) that we fail to pause and consider everything we are blessed with and every way in which we have more than we could ever deserve, or even earn.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul exhorts the church, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” The will of God is for us to be thankful, to give thanks. And that purpose is meant to be carried out in and during all of life’s circumstances. While we may be challenged by Paul’s statement, it is neither illogical nor impossible, for we have all been blessed beyond measure, if only for the very reason that Christ “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil 2:8). And the crazy thing is that he did that “while we were yet sinners,” while we were yet unlovable, unteachable, disobedient. What blessing, what honor, we have to be called the sons and daughters of this sacrificial, unconditional loving God.

In the sermon Not Before, Not After, Pastor Steve Jones uses the story of the ten lepers in Luke to discuss how being thankful is a choice. And it must be a choice we make in the good times and in the bad, because if we don’t choose thankfulness in the hard times, we may never return to Jesus, grateful, offering thanksgiving once we’ve been healed.
