In 1995, Rick Warren released the book, ''The Purpose Driven Church'' receiving much applause AND skepticism. The 'applause' came from the many who were seeking to reach the communities. If you have read this book (which is an easy read), you have discovered that Rick calls us back to focusing on the things which are important to Jesus and making HIS purpose, OUR purpose.

The skepticism, in large part, came from those who were leading churches or members of a church that was dying a slow death because they had accepted the modern days mantra that if we keep doing what we have been doing, then everything is going to be okay. Here was the attitude, ''After all, our church has been here 100 years and it worked for our grandparents so it will work for us.'' Have you ever really thought about that mentality (and not just in church work)? Do you really want that life again? I did a lookup on the internet about life in the USA in the early 1900s.

Approximately one hundred years ago the average life expectancy was 50 years old, only 14% of the homes in the US had a bathtub, only 8% had a phone, a 3-minute call from Denver to New York costs $11, they were only 8000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 a year. Ladies, 95% of all births took place at home. 90% of US Physicians didn't go to college, only med school. Only 6% of all Americans graduated from High School, 2% of adults could read or write. Do you really want that life again? I really don't think so.

In PDC, Rick called us as a church to look at ourselves in light of modernity and eternity to see what Jesus' purpose is for us. In other words, ''What we (the church) are designed to be.''
