Part 9: Curbing Criticism and Cockiness
Series: Faith With Boots On
Stuart Briscoe
James 4:11-17

James insists that the problems Christians experience are often caused by attitudes that are wrong. His solution is "humble yourselves before the Lord…" Criticism and cockiness aren't evidences of humility and must be curbed.

I. Curbing the Critical Spirit. vv. 11-12

A. What do we mean by a critical spirit?
1. What it isn't.
a. Judicial activity. Acts 4:19-20
b. Careful analysis. John 7:24
c. Spiritual oversight. 1 John 4:1; Galatians 6:1
d. Personal evaluation. 1 Corinthians 4:3; 11:31-32

2. What it is.
a. "Katalaleite"-talking against, behind, down.
b. "The third tongue"-Rabbis.
"Slays the speaker, the spoken to, the spoken against."
c. Example of Miriam and Aaron. Numbers 12:1 16

B. What is so wrong about a critical spirit?
1. It destroys relationships-"brother," "neighbor."
2. It disregards the Law-"speaks against the Law."
3. It defies God-"only one Judge…" N.B. James 2:13

Part 10: Imminent Return-Immediate Concern
Series: Faith With Boots On
Stuart Briscoe
James 5:1-12

The return of Christ in glory-or the second advent-will be in marked contrast to His initial coming-or first advent-in obscurity and humility. People look at this facet of Christian doctrine differently, but James, true to form, views it practically and outlines the concern that accompanies an understanding of the return.

I. The Imminent Return of Christ.

A. The promise is certain.
1. The Savior's teaching. See Matthew 24:27, 37, 39, 42, 44
2. The Master's assurance. John 14:3
3. The angels' affirmation. Acts 1:11
4. The Apostles' proclamation. 1 Thessalonians 4:15 16

B. The program is concealed.
1. Pre-, post-, or a-millennial?
2. The timing is not advertised. Matthew 24:42 51

C. The practicalities are compelling.
1. It is the Lord who is coming-so acknowledge Him. v. 7
2. His coming is near-so await Him. v. 8
3. He will judge in righteousness-so obey Him. v. 9
4. He will bring things to completion (Telos)-so trust Him. v. 11
