A Strategic Vision To Reach Cities And Nations
Introduction: We need to lift ourselves out of a self-centered spirituality, a mentality that says we are victims rather than warriors. Our vision must be God's vision - to reach our city and make it a place where God's presence, God's ways, and God's word are a dominant force. Over half of the world's population lives in urban centers and large cities. Most of these large cities are filled with violence, drugs, gangs, prostitution, poverty, perversion. We are called to our cities not because they are beautiful or the best place to raise children, but because God has called us to that particular city. The word "city" occurs 1,090 times in the Old Testament. They had walled cities and fortified cities. Cities were built with a purpose: store cities, treasure cities, law cities, military cities, and cities for chariots and horsemen.
Acts 26:19 Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.
Acts 13:49 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region.
I. VISION FOR REACHING CITIES AND REGIONS
A. THE REACH MANDATE
Acts 1:8 …to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
1. Jerusalem: Represents our primary city responsibility
2. Judea: Represents our primary region responsibility
4. Ends of the Earth: Represents our global responsibility
Our strategy is to…
Reach our metro region with the gospel, making a place where God's presence dwells, God's ways are known, God's word is a dominant force and people are changed by the Holy Spirit.
Minister hope to our region, proclaiming God's destiny for our region, and bringing solutions and answers to our problems. God loves our cities and our regions.
B. WE MUST SEE OUR CITY AND REGION AS IT REALLY IS, NOT MERELY AS IT APPEARS TO BE
Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.
Jeremiah 29:7 And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace.
Isaiah 58:12 Those from among you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, the Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.
C. WE MUST SEE OUR CITY THE WAY GOD SEES OUR CITY
1. Our vision for missions must focus on cities. God's plan begins in the garden but ends in the city. God has a vision for our city. It can become a place of shelter, communion, purity, hope. Our city has a mark of God's sovereign purpose upon it.
2. Arnold Toynbee in his book Cities of Destiny says, "In order to become a city, it would have to evolve at least the rudiments of a soul. This is perhaps the essence of cityhood." What is the soul of your city? What is their mindset? Emot ...
