INTRODUCTION

1. I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE TODAY THAT I USED TO BE EMBARRASSED ABOUT, BUT AS I'VE GOTTEN OLDER IT REALLY DOESN'T BOTHER ME ANYMORE. I WAS A "MOMMA'S BOY" GROWING UP. I AM THE BABY IN MY FAMILY AND UNFORTUNATELY I ACTED LIKE IT FAR LONGER THAN I SHOULD HAVE. I WAS ALSO A "HOME-BOY." I LOVED THE SECURITY AND THE SAFETY OF BEING AT HOME.

2. ADD THOSE TWO THINGS TOGETHER AND YOU CAN JUST IMAGINE HOW TRAUMATIC, GUT WRENCHING AND AGONIZING MY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL WAS. I CAN REMEMBER IT LITERALLY LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. I CAN REMEMBER GOING TO BED THE NIGHT BEFORE DREADING THE SUNRISE. I CAN REMEMBER WAKING UP EARLY, DREADING MOTHER COMING TO MY ROOM TO TELL ME IT WAS TIME TO GET UP AND GET READY FOR SCHOOL. ALL OF THE DREAD IN THE WORLD WOULD NOT KEEP THAT SUN FROM RISING AND THAT SCHOOL FROM STARTING.

3. I GOT DRESSED IN THE BEST THAT I HAD AND PACKED MY SACK LUNCH OF KETCHUP SANDWICHES AND POTATO CHIPS (YES, YOU HEARD IT RIGHT, I ATE KETCHUP SANDWICHES). I KISSED MY MOTHER GOOD-BY AS SHE SAT ON THE FRONT PORCH AND OFF I WENT.

4. HERE IS THE FUNNY THING. THE SCHOOL WAS ONLY ABOUT TWO FOOTBALL FIELDS FROM MY FRONT YARD. YOU COULD SIT ON OUR FRONT PORCH AND SEE THE PRINCIPAL INSIDE HIS OFFICE. IT TOOK, MAYBE, ALL OF THREE TO FOUR MINUTES TO WALK TO SCHOOL.

5. MY MOTHER LAUGHS TO THIS DAY WHEN SHE RECALLS THAT VERY FIRST DAY OF SENDING HER BABY BOY TO CHICOPEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. YOU SEE, I TURNED A THREE MINUTE STROLL INTO A TWENTY MINUTE SLOG. EVERY TEN STEPS I WOULD TURN AND LOOK BACK AT MY MOM STANDING ON THE FRONT PORCH WATCHING ME GO. I WOULD WAVE AT HER AND SEE WOULD WAVE AT ME. I WOULD TURN AND TAKE, MAYBE, TEN MORE STEPS AND I WOULD TURN AND LOOK BACK AT HER AGAIN. THIS WENT ON AND ON AND ON AND ON.

6. MOM TRIED TO ENCOURAGE ME AND THE ENCOURAGEMENT GOT MORE INTENSE BY THE MI ...
