INTRODUCTION: Last week, we examined the letters to the churches at Pergamos and Thyatira. This evening, we look at two more churches, Sardis and Philadelphia.
I. THE CHURCH AT SARDIS (VV. 1-6)
The city of Sardis was located about 35 miles south of Thyatira. It was known to be the first city to ever mint coins of silver and gold. Sardis served as the capital of the Lydian king Croesus.1
The city fell to the Romans in 188 B.C. During its days as a Roman city, it became an important Christian center. However, the church at Sardis was evidently affected by complacency. A tremendous earthquake in A.D. 17 struck Sardis, a blow from which it was never fully able to recover.2
A. The Introduction (vs. 1a)
1. The Seven Spirits. The Seven Spirits, you will remember, represent the Holy Spirit; however, the Seven Spirits also represent the Lord Jesus, the second Person of the godhead. In Rev. 5:6, John said, "And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth." The Lamb is said to have seven horns and seven eyes, representing His Omnipotence and Omniscience; He is all powerful and all knowing. Seven is God's perfect number of completion, fullness and perfection. You will remember that we had looked at Isaiah 11:1, 2, where we saw the Spirit of the Lord resting upon Christ, who is referred to as the Branch coming from David. It says there are Seven Spirits that rest upon Him: The Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of Wisdom, the Spirit of Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel, the Spirit of Might, the Spirit of Knowledge, and the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord.
