The Immeasurable Value of God's Word
INTRODUCTION: Psalm 19 tells us that the heavens declare God's glory, but the Scriptures tell us what God did so that we may share in that glory. There is no conflict between what God does in His universe and what He says in His word. It was by His word that He created the worlds (33:9), and it is by His word that he controls the worlds (148:8). David recorded six different names for God's word, six attributes of the word, and six ministries of the word in the lives of those who receive it and obey it.
I. THE ENCOURAGEMENT GOD'S WORD SHARES.
A. RESTORATION. 7a
''The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul'' - word torah is used for law, which means instruction, direction, teaching. It comes from a word that means ''to shoot an arrow,'' for a teacher's aim to hit the target and achieve specific goals in the lives of the students.
''Perfect'' - flawless and complete, never needs revision or improvement.
Hebrews 4:11-13, ''Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.''
The word of God is the instrument He uses to turn men and women from darkness to light. It serves as His instructor in regard to sin and righteousness. As the Anglican Thirty-Ninth Article puts it, ''God has given us everything in His word necessary for our salvation.'' The function of the law is to convert us. It reveals God's holiness and our sin. It drives us to despair so that we may be driven to Christ. (Luther)
