It's easy to stray off course. That's true in a marriage .. in a business .. and yes it's true as a Christian and Church. Have you ever been in a conversation with somebody and after awhile somebody asks, "Now what were we talking about?"
You see ... it's easy to stray off course .. isn't it? It's easy to forget what we were talking about. And when it comes to being a Christian or a part of the Church ... it seems the further we get down the road ... we tend to stray away from God's purpose.
In my estimation ... if the 21st century church is going to impact this generation with the gospel of Jesus Christ .. then we're going to have to get back to the basics of what it means to be a Christian and what it means to be the Church.
From all indications .. the average Christian and the average Church has strayed off course. It's time we regroup and get back on course. And the way it will happen is by our getting back to the basics of what it means to be a Christian and the Church. And the book God's given us to help us get there is the book of Acts.
So take God's Word and join me in the book of Acts chapter 8 .. where we find two great extremes: in verse 1 we read there was "great persecution" and in verse 8 there was "great joy." And it all goes back to what happened to Stephen back in chapter 7.
You will remember that Stephen was falsely accused of speaking blasphemy against Moses and the Temple. He was brought before the Sanhedrin where he responded by giving them a lesson on Hebrew History. And rather than repenting of their sin .. they got angry at him and in chapter 7.59 we read that they "stoned" him to death.
By the way ... in 7.55 we find something very unusual: Jesus standing in heaven. "But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God." Throughout the scripture .. ...
