We are learning these days about getting back to basics of being a true follower of Jesus Christ. What does it mean to be a Christian? Is it possible to live the Christian life in today's world? And what about our church life? Is being a part of a local fellowship of believers really all that important? And if so, why?
Well that's what we find Dr. Luke writing about throughout the book of Acts: the basics of Christianity and the Church. Today ... we pick up where we left off last time together in Acts 2.
Now remember .. back in chapter 1 the followers of Jesus were preparing for the power of God to fall upon them. They were now living back under the authority of scripture which means they were once again putting God's word into practice.
Living under the authority of scripture calls us to: unity (promoting and protecting it) .. to love one another .. to serve one another .. to forgive one another. Here's how Paul said it to the church at Corinth in 1 Corinthians 10.24, "Let no one seek his own, but each one the others well being." That only happens when you're living under the authority of scripture.
Now when you move into chapter 2 .. you read about the Church Empowered! There was the Sound that Surrounded them. And that wind was a symbol of the Holy Spirit for Jesus equated the Holy Spirit to the wind in John 3. Next .. there was the Sight that Touched them. And those tongues of fire were also a symbol of the Holy Spirit because like fire .. the Holy Spirit spreads the gospel .. He purifies and purges us and keeps us clean. And like fire .. He illumines the Word and through us the World.
And finally .. there was the Spirit that filled them. And how God wants us to be spirit-filled saints. That's when the power comes! The power to overcome temptation. The power for purity. The power to share Jesus with a f ...
