INTRODUCTION: John introduces the standard of love that is reflected in genuine Christianity. It becomes the measuring stick for every expression of love. Christian love is self-sacrificing and giving. Christ's giving up His life for believers epitomized the true nature of Christian love. The Lord calls Christians to the same standard of love for one another as he had for us.

I. PERCEPTION. 16

A. VOLUNTARY DEATH.

1. Experience.
"By this we know love"

2. Expression.
"because He laid down His life for us"

3. Exhortation.
"And we also ought to lay down our lives"

B. VICARIOUS DEATH. 16b

"for the brethren" – It was a death on behalf of others; in place of, instead of. Note v.14a

C. VICTORIOUS DEATH.

"He laid down" – a once-for-all-action


II. PARTICIPATION. 16

"we ought to" – daily attitude, daily disposition. Your life ought to be constantly lived for others.

EXAMPLE: General William Booth (Salvation Army) missed a convocation. He wired this message, "Others, Lord, help me to live for others that I might live for Thee."
