James 5:16-18

We are going to talk today about the "Prayer Life of a Spiritual Champion." We could not leave this subject of how to be a spiritual champion without talking about the subject of prayer. For all the spiritual champions that we read of in the Bible were men and women of prayer. And certainly we cannot be a spiritual champion and be all God wants us to be apart from knowing what it is to pray effectively, how to touch heaven, how to get our prayers answered.

James 5:16-18 "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. 17Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops."

As I look at this crowd today and I cannot imagine anyone at any stage in life that does not need to learn more about prayer. Certainly there are some today who just got married. If you were married recently then you know as you face life together, as you seek to establish your home, you want to learn how to pray, to have that home, that relationship that God wants you to have as a married couple.

And certainly when school begins we are all reminded as a parent you need to pray for wisdom, amen? If you are a teacher, you not only need to pray but you need prayer. Many of you are in a time in your spiritual life in walking with the Lord when you are seeking to know more and seeking to get closer and seeking God's direction, God's leadership, so you certainly want to know how to pray and find the will of God and the mind of God.

Many of us have friends who do not know the Lord, we know people who are way from the Lord, we are concerned about their spiritual condition, their relationship with the Lord, and so we want to know how to pray for them. What can we do in prayer that would move them toward God that would influence them to come back to the Lord? So all of us have a need to know more about prayer. The prayer life of a spiritual champion is given to us here in the example of a man named Elijah.

I. THE CHARACTER OF EFFECTIVE PRAYER
So the first thing I want us to see here in these verses is the character of effective prayer. We looked at the life of prophet from the Old Testament given by James in the New Testament as an example of what it is to be a spiritual prayer warrior. And James says the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

A. The Intensity Of The Asking
I want you to notice first of all then the intensity of the asking. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. This is picturing prayer not just as "I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep", not just a little light prayer, not just a prayer hastily said and easily forgott ...
