The Book of Philippians: A Verse By Verse Study
Last week the title of the message was, "A Crash Course On Humility," with three points. We are to have The Same Love, The Same Mind and The Same Compassion. In Paul's words, "esteeming others better than ourselves" (vs. 3b). Nothing was to be done in "strife" and "vain glory."
In our lesson tonight Paul has already set the stage concerning humility, for in the following verses he begins to discuss the Person who is our role model in humility--the Lord Jesus Christ. In one writer's words, "The point here is that Jesus left a state of inexpressible glory, and took upon him the most humble form of humanity, and performed the most lowly offices, that He might benefit us" (vs. 8).1
Let me give you two points:

I. HIS HUMILITY (VV. 5-8)
He gave up His glory (vs. 7a), "But made of Himself no reputation..." Can you possibly imagine a more humbling picture than that of the Son of God giving up His glory? (Keep in mind, He never for a moment gave up His deity--He remained God throughout His incarnation, His life on earth and His ascension into heaven).
Here's what Jesus said in John 17:5, "And now, O Father, glorify thou me with Thine own self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was."
Jesus had humbled Himself; and in order to do that He voluntarily gave up His glory. On one occasion He revealed His glory to the disciples. He had taken Peter, James and John up to a mountain and there He transfigured Himself before them. The three disciples were fast asleep, and the Bible says in Luke 9:32, "But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him" (Elijah and Moses).
Here's the point: If Jesus is our example in humility, and if He was willing to give up Hi ...
