James 1:2-4
INTRODUCTION: James addresses the recepients of his epistle by "my brethren" (Christians)
These Christians were under the weight of pagan religion and under persecution for not
worshiping the emperor of the day! These Christians lived in the day of the cross, crucifiction,
the sword, the fire, and feeding the Christians to the lions! Real world of fiery trials!
All types of trials: Abraham, rich young ruler, and Job!
*ALL CHRISTIANS WILL UNDERGO TRIALS! THEY MAY BE DIFFERENT TYPES BUT WERE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT!
You can count on suffering! We are living in a day when many of us are undergoing trials ! The
Bible says we will undergo trials as Christians!
1. THE REALITY OF TRIALS IN OUR LIVES.(2)
Exp: Not if you encounter trials, but when you encounter trials!
Trials--Grk. word is "peirasmois" which means fiery trials! James and Peter used this
word in a similar manner, however, neither suggested that God was the cause of suffering!
What is the difference between trial and temptation? Trials come from without and tempta-
tions come from within!
Ill: Remember the condition of the day when the epistle was writter? Day of sword, etc....
App: All of us will go through fiery trials of life.(Examples)
a. death of a spouse or child f. Broken relationship with friend
b. sickness or loss of health g. career disappointment
c. loss of job h. divorce
d. trouble with a rebellious child i . bad relationship with your boss on job!
e. financial distress
*All of our worlds are being shaken by trials--Trials are no respecter of persons--We are all in
the same boat!
2. THE PURPOSE OF TRIALS IN OUR LIVES.(3-4)
Ill: When trials come many or most people say, "Why me?" "What have I done wrong?"
Many people have such a warped or perverted view of the nature of God they say, "I am un-
der a curse, I am punished for something b ...
