'TISSUES OF THE 1990'S ADDRESSED IN THE FIRST CENTURY"
John 2:1-12
June 30, 1991
INTRODUCTION:
Marriage and Family . . . Failure . . . Emptiness . . . Worth
or Self-esteem . . . Alcoholism . . . Religion ...
These issues are all very real in our society today. Would
it surprise you to know that these issues of the 1990's were

self-gratification. The desire to please self is an old problem,
not a new one. The quest for more meaning, more worth,
more of this or that always ends in failure apart from Jesus
Christ.
A word of clarity:
In the gospel of John we see eight signs performed by Jesus.
Some people call them miracles, but the word in the original
language is sign.
The word, "miracle", is the word "dunamis" which means
power and denotes the manifestation of power in the act.
The word, "sign", is the word "simeion" meaning the value
or significance of the mighty or miraculous act.
So, in the gospel of John through studying the eight signs we
must look at their value or significance or their meanings.
For example, today we will witness the turning of water into
wine. That was a miraculous event with much sign or value
to you and me.

tremendous experience of celebration.
"Mother of Jesus" - Mary was present even though never
referred to by name.
"Jesus was also invited" - some scholars thought this
could have been a sister of Jesus being married, or
a close friend, or even Nathaniel since it was in his
home town.
"His disciples" - Andrew,. Peter, John, James. Philip.
