Are You One Of Those Born Again Christians?
In the summer of 1976 I served on the staff of a church in
Gresham, Oregon, a suberb of Portland. I will never forget
the way Jimmy Carter campaigned across this nation as a
professing "born again" Christian. The evangelical community
was thrilled with a man who would use that phrase "born again."
In many ways his testimony paved the way for the use of the
term all across the nation, especially in the world. Now you
hear even the lost, pagan, and unchurched world use the words
"born again" in a slang manner.
Is there anything to this experience known as being born again?
What does it mean and does it really mean anything at all?-
Listen to a recent article from the front page of the sports
section of USA Today ....
The question I would like to ask you today is, 'Are you
one of those 'born again' Christians?" The only real
Christian is a born again Christian. Please evaluate the
text newly and openly with me today:
I. THE UNIVERSAL SEARCH FOR ANSWERS. (vs. 1-2)
The word "universal" means that all persons in the world
are searching for answers to their spiritual questions.
In our story today, Nicodemus, personifies each person
in the world in their honest search for answers.
"Pharisees"?- the religious hyper-legalists of the day.
They were people with a well developed religious
conscience. They believed in "salvation by works."
"Ruler" - a member of the ruling body called the
* Tradition has it that Nicodemus was one of the three
richest men in Jerusalem. He was the best man
that religion, education, and culture could ever
make, yet he was searching for answers to his
"By night" - desired a private conversation and possibly
did not want to be seen talking to Jesus.
"We know" - some members of the Pharisees.
"Signs" - miracles
* He was recognizing some divine involvement through
the life of Jesus ...
