I JOHN 3:11-24
"HAVE A HEART"
JAMES MERRITT

INTRODUCTION

1. FROM THE VERY OUTSET OF THIS PASSAGE WE ARE
TOLD IN VERSE 11 THAT JOHN'S CONCERN IS THAT
CHRISTIANS SHOULD LOVE ONE ANOTHER. NOW THOUGHTS
ARE A MATTER OF THE HEAD. ACTIONS ARE A MATTER OF
THE HANDS. BUT LOVE IS A MATTER OF THE HEART.
JESUS SAID, "WHERE A MAN'S TREASURE IS THERE WILL
HIS HEART BE ALSO." AND A MAN'S TREASURE IS SIMPLY
THAT WHICH HE LOVES THE MOST. SO LOVE IS DIRECTLY
RELATED TO THE HEART.

2. NOW EVERYBODY HAS A HEART. WHETHER IT IS NATURAL
OR IN THE CASE OF AT LEAST ONE MAN MECHANICAL.
EVERYBODY HAS A HEART. BUT WHEN THE WORD OF GOD USES
THE WORD HEART IT IS REFERRING NOT TO THE PHYSICAL
ORGAN THAT PUMPS BLOOD THROUGH THE BODY BUT RATHER
TO A MAN S BASIC DISPOSITION, HIS SPIRITUAL INCLINATION.
NOW EVEN IN THAT SENSE OF THE WORD, WE ALL
HAVE A HEART BUT WE DO NOT ALL HAVE THE SAME KIND OF
HEART. JOHN PERFORMS A SPIRITUAL EKG ON MANKIND AND
HE DISCOVERS AT LEAST L KINDS OF HEARTS, THE
FIRST TWO KINDS OF HEARTS ARE UNCHRISTIAN. THE
THIRD KIND OF HEART IS AT BEST SUB-CHRISTIAN, AND
ONLY THE FOURTH KIND OF HEART IS TRULY CHRISTIAN.

OF ANOTHER HUMAN BEING?

A. A SATANIC HEART
2
1. TALK ABOUT ROOTS. THE ROOTS OF A
MURDERER GO BACK TO THE DEVIL HIMSELF. PHYSICALLY
WE ALL HAVE ONLY ONE ROOT. WE CAN ALL TRACE OUR
PHYSICAL LINEAGE BACK TO ADAM BUT SPIRITUALLY
YOU CAN HAVE ONE OF TWO ROOTS. YOU CAN TRACE YOURSELF
BACK SPIRITUALLY TO SATAN OR YOU CAN TRACE YOURSELF
BACK SPIRITUALLY TO GOD. IT BEARS REPEATING THAT
ALL MEN ARE NOT BROTHERS. WE ARE NOT ALL PART OF
ONE GREAT BIG HAPPY FAMILY. GOD IS NOT EVERYONE'S
FATHER. FOR JOHN TELLS US IN VERSE 10 THAT THERE
IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CHILD ...
