INTRODUCTION: The scene in this passage is an arena of
faith. It is as if all the believers of all the ages are in the
grandstands of glory looking down on us. These are not
spectators who are simply encouraging us, but fellow
contenders who have run the race of life already. Run is a key
word. It is derived from our word agony. It is not a passive
luxury, but is demanding, requires self-disciple, determination
Three major truths about this race: one, we are not to compete
against other runners; two, our strength is not in ourselves; and
three, every runner can win.
I. THE COMPANY IS ETERNAL. 1
“therefore” - the Bible was written to be lived and not
just to be learned.
James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not
hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
There is to be the Declaration and Explanation of the
Word of God, in order that there can be Demonstration
of the power of God.

“so great a cloud of witnesses”
Not spectators, but testifiers; the great heroes of
faith bear witness to us because God first bore witness to
them. These witnesses are winners that are still
witnessing today and assuring us that the race can be
won. They knew what it takes to be a winner.
