INTRODUCTION: The essence of sin is selfishness. The heart of
the matter is the matter of the heart.

I. DESIRES THAT CONTROL OURSELVES. v.l

"Among You" - believers living in James' day.

A. REASON. la

"Quarrels" - speaks of continuous conflict; long
drawn-out resentment; spirit of bitterness. This
is a spirit of conflict w/in our heart.

"Fights" - individual conflicts rather than long
period of resentment; outward expression.

B. RESULT. lb

If war within - soon war without

C. RECOGNITION. lc

"Lusts" - evil desires; unbridled search for
pleasure.

"War" - strategy; the members of our fleshly
bodies are armed and ready. General passion,
major pride, sergeant ego, private lust. These
soldiers are waiting to take over and war against
us.

II. DESIRES THAT CONTEST OTHERS. v.2
