THE QUALIFICATIONS AND MINISTRY OF GOD'S SERVANT

I Timothy 3:8-l3



INTRODUCTION: First deacons were appointed to be assistants to
the apostles. In the local church today, Deacons relieve the
Pastors of other tasks so that they may concentrate on the
ministry of the Word, prayer, and spiritual oversight. Deacon
means servant; one that stirs up dust while serving tables.

I. CHRISTIAN CONVICTIONS OF HIS HEART. v.8-9

v.8 "Grave" - serious from standpoint of activity in
service. Not taken lightly. An intense conviction of
the seriousness of life; taken responsibility seriously.

"Not double-tongued" - twisting truth; does not tell
tales
from house to house; not a gossip; you can depend on what
he says.

"Not given to much wine" - the Word describes a person
who sits long with the cup and thus drinks to excess. It
is a well know fact that water was not pure in those
days,
so that weak wine, taken in moderation, would have been
healthier to drink. However, there is a vast difference
(I Timothy 5:23) between the cultural use of wine in
Bible
days and supporting the alcohol industry today. Romans
l4:2l would apply today in a special way. A Godly deacon
would certainly want to give the best example and not be
an excuse for sin in the life of some weaker brother.



"Not greedy of filthy lucre" - Denotes eagerness for
dishonest gain. A spiritual attitude toward money;
honest
