God Is Faithful by Johnny Hunt

II Timothy 2:11-13

July 15, 1992

INTRODUCTION: In harmony with what the Apostle has just stated,
he now introduces a "reliable saying." This "faithful saying"
is probably part of an early statement of faith recited by
believers. It is faith in Jesus Christ that gives us the
victory. Some believe II Timothy 2:11-13 to be part of a hymn
which served as inspired praises of the Christian Church.
Someone said that it consist of four stanzas or verses and that
a good title for the song could be "IF." Note that God's
faithfulness is seen in three areas in particular.

This passage speaks of the believer's
union with Christ.

When a person receives Christ as his

Aorist tense: Reference is to
something that has already taken place.

Potentially: when Jesus died
Experimentally: when we were
identified with Him by faith.

Romans 6:8, "Now if we be dead
with Christ, we believe that we
shall also live with him."

Romans 6:11, "Likewise, reckon ye
also yourselves to be dead indeed
unto sin, but alive unto God
through Jesus Christ, our Lord."

His death is reckoned to us; God
accounts it so.
