CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORK OF THE MINISTRY

II Timothy 2:3-10

INTRODUCTION: Paul, in his challenge to young Pastor Timothy,
used several aspects of the ministry as they related to
different demands that accompanied the call to service. Let's
look at several of the aspects.

I. THE DUTY OF THE SOLDIER. v.3-4

"therefore" - reminder of his role as an
example, mentor, impression, discipler

A. ENDURANCE. 3

Many people have the idea that the
ministry is a "soft job." Preachers
are often the butt of jokes that
suggests that preachers are lazy and
should be ashamed of accepting their
salaries. But a dedicated Christian
minister is in a battle that
requires spiritual endurance.

"endure hardness" - II Tim. 1:8,
"partaker of the affliction"; same
Greek word. To bear evil treatment
along with or take one's share of ill
treatment. Paul was encouraging
Timothy to be willing to suffer ill
treatment as he took the gospel to
others.

Realizing the grace of God and man's
need for the gospel, Paul implied that
Timothy should suffer anything
necessary to take the message of
salvation to others.

Paul was challenging Timothy to be
a "front line" Christian.
