A Challenge To Faithfulness by Johnny Hunt


II Timothy 1:13-18

INTRODUCTION: Throughout the centuries God's work has been done
by men and women who stood stedfast in their hours of trial. It
would have been convenient for them to have compromised but they
stood firm. Paul was such a man, and he encouraged Timothy to
follow his example.

The keynote of II Timothy is that of not being ashamed. This
chapter serves as a vivid reminder to every Christian that there
is pressure from the world, the flesh, and the Devil to be
ashamed of Jesus Christ and other believers.

Wherever we go, even in professedly Christian circles, we find
the faithful and the faithless. Here we see the challenge to be
faithful to God, His Word, and His people. Note that this
challenge begins with:


God had given the deposit of spiritual
truths to Paul (I Tim. 1:11) and he
had given it to Timothy (6:20). It
was now Timothy's solemn responsibility to "hold
fast" (v.13) and "guard" (v.14)
the precious deposit of Christian truth,
and to pass it along to others (2:2).

"hold fast" - stresses possession and
indicates that Paul was very concerned
that Timothy would tightly hold to
"the form of sound words."

"form" - a pattern; an architect's
sketch; Timothy had his model to go
by. It consisted of the words which he had heard
from Paul. Some translate the
word "standard." Paul had given Timothy
a general outline of tea ...
