OUR ADDITION TO GOD'S PROVISION

II Peter l:5-ll


INTRODUCTION: Spiritual growth is not automatic. It requires
cooperation with God and the application of spiritual diligence
and discipline. The foundation of our personal relationship
with Jesus Christ is based on faith. This speaks of our
initial acceptance of God's love as offered in the gospel. Now,
Peter speaks of building on faith.

I. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A GODLY LIFE. v 5-7

v.5 "Giving" - adding on your part

"Diligence" - stresses the urgency of his appeal; making
every effort to bring alongside; with intense effort;
zealous endeavor.

"Add" - generous and costly cooperation; to supply
generously; we develop one quality as we exercise
another quality. These qualities grow out of a vital
relationship
with Jesus.

A. VIRTUE. 5c

Moral excellence; the fulfillment of a thing; to
fulfill its purpose. A Christian is supposed to
glorify God
because he has God's nature within; so, when he does
this, he shows "excellence" because he is fulfilling
his purpose in life. The right conduct under
discipline; by
this, good habits are established and fleshly desires
are
dissipated. This word deals in the moral sense; them
who know the Lord should prove their relationship to
Him by holiness of life.
