INTRODUCTION: Peter opened this letter with positive teaching
about salvation, Christian growth, and the dependability on the
Word of God. He had a balanced ministry, and it is important
that we maintain that balance today.

The picture in this text is of proud people who try to build
themselves up while they try to tear down everybody else. They
show no respect for authority and are not afraid to attack and
defame people in important positions.

Some people have a purely negative ministry and never build
anything. They are too busy fighting the enemy. Others claim
to be "positive", but they never defend what they have built.
The Bible calls for a time of defense and offense.

I. THE FALSE TEACHERS AND THEIR SLANDER. v.l0-l2

A. Their Fleshly Walk. l0a.

Main problem was not Satan or the world system.
"Flesh" - depraved nature; look out for number one;
do your own thing; despising authority.

B. Their Feigned Words. l0b.

"Presumptuous" - very daring and bold.
There is a boldness that is heroic, but there is also
a boldness that is satanic.


"self-willed" - lives only to please themselves.
While
outwardly they appeared to serve God and minister to
the people, inwardly they fed their own egos and
feathered their own nests.

"dignities" - exalted ones; angels may be in view
here;
glorious ones.
