Jeremiah 26-33

Just as a reminder for you, for those of you who weren't with us, remember I have very small hands but very large arms -- long arms, but this is just an overview of Jeremiah again. It's as I said before, it's book-ended by Jeremiah's call in the first chapter and by an account of the fall of Jerusalem in the final chapters and in between you have the two major portions which we're looking at are the prophecies to Judah and then he focuses on the surrounding nations including the people who themselves will ultimately bring Judah into captivity. And, during these prophecies to Judah, you have some prophecies that occur before the fall of Jerusalem, some that occur during it, and some that are given after the captivity that takes place -- the final captivity. Just to remind you again, jut so this is fresh in your mind's eye, that the Babylonian captivity really occurred in three stages: 605 was the first stage, when Nebuchadnezzar came in and brought some away as captives and there he brought the princes and he brought the nobles, like Daniel away to train them and to teach them the ways of the Chaldeans. The second captivity occurred in 597 and there 10000 more exiles were brought away, and Ezekiel was one of those. And then the third captivity occurred in 586, and that was the most devastating of all, because it was in 586 that the glorious temple of Solomon along with the palaces, the city walls, all was brought into complete and utter destruction. Nothing remained. Virtually everything was demolished. And, this is where Jeremiah fits in then, 627 to 580 BC, so you can see, his ministry preceded and went throughout the period of these destructive events. Jeremiah's ministry, as we can see especially in tonight's readings, was not well-received by the people, but rather, he was subjected to the very unenviable call of being completely rejected for some forty plus years by his people.
