A. OPENING ILLUSTRATION: LITTLE LEAGUE
ILL. The Little League, internationally, is made up of
over twenty-five thousand teams in twenty-three
countries across the world. In 1957, I believe,
that one of the most unusual teams in the
history of the Little League World Series
participated in that event. This team was from
Monterey, Mexico. They were an unusually
small team - short in stature, they looked
undernourished. But, my, how they played
baseball. They did everything exactly right.
They won their region and they went on to the
district tournament, which took place in McAllen,
Texas. All the other teams from that district saw
this little team from across the border in
Monterey, and they sort of laughed and said,
“They sure look small.” But somehow they won
that tournament and won that district and went
on to the Little League World Series, which
takes place every year in Williamsport
Pennsylvania. Once again they were the
underdogs, as all the press gathered for this
event that’s televised nationally and
internationally. But they went through the first
round and the second round until finally miracle
of miracles, this Little League team from
Monterey was playing in the final game for the
international championship of Little League.
They were playing, of all teams, one of the
largest teams ever to participate in the World
Series. They were form California. And they
weighed all the members of the California team
and all the members of the Monterey team and
discovered that the California team outweighed
the other team over thirty pounds per player. A
reporter interviewed one of the players for the
Monterey team and told them how large the
team was from California and how they were
heavily favored. And the little fellow said in
