INTRO. Seven times Jesus used the words "I Am" to describe himself to a lost world and waiting disciples. There was a reason for Him beginning by saying "I am BREAD." No quirk of fate this!

Jesus began with the necessities of life. He went back to the basic priority of every man's existence. Food - sustenance.

Only three things absolutely necessary to life.

1. Food - and drink
2. Shelter
3. Security - protection

Flowers you may want and like, but food you must have! What a lesson for the Christian and the church! What good if we fill our lives and churches with beauty, rich music, noble architecture, good as these things be, and neglect to provide the essential, the BREAD OF LIFE - JESUS CHRIST!

Yea, let us write one very doorpost and panel in this building the words of Jesus, "In this place is one greater than the temple."

But to live we must eat - what prompted Jesus to talk of Himself as bread?

ILL. feeding of 5000 - hungry crowds. Verse 34
"give us that bread every day of our lives."

What a picture of human nature, grasping, reaching out, selling our souls, trading convictions and moral and self-respect for something Jesus said would perish.

Verse 27 - Jesus said it - "Labor not for the meat which perisheth."
