DECEPTION: IS IT WORTH IT?
QNE OF THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD PEOPLE OF THE BIBLE IS
JACOB. MARC ANTONY, AT JULIUS CEASAR'S DEATH IS REPORTED BY
SHAKESPEARE TO HAVE SAID, 'THE EVIL THAT MEN DO LIVES AFTER
THEM; THE GOOD IS OFT INTERRED WITH THEIR BONES."
WELL, THE GOOD OF JACOB IS FOUND IN GOD'S WORD, BUT WE
OFTEN SEE ONLY THE MISTAKES OF HIS LIFE. WOULD YOU THINK OF
THIS: IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, AS WELL AS IN THE OLD, GOD OFTEN
LINKS HIS NAME WITH JACOB. WE READ SO OFTEN THE BIBLE TALKING
ABOUT THE "GOD OF JACOB." SO MANY TIMES GOD IS SAYING,
"JACOB IS MY MAN." IN PSALMS 47:4, MALACHI 1: 2 AND 3, AS
WELL AS IN ROMANS 9:13, WE FIND GOD SAYING, "I HAVE LOVED

KNOWN BY JACOB'S SECOND NAME, "ISRAEL," THAT WAS GIVEN TO
HIM AT PENIEL, AS FOUND IN GENESIS 32:23. PSALMS 135:4
STATES THAT THE LORD HATH CHOSEN JACOB UNTO HIMSELF AND
ISRAEL FOR HIS PECULIAR. TREASURE. GOD AGAIN HONORS THE NAME
OF JACOB IN ISAIAH 41:8 AND.9: "BUT THOU, ISRAEL, ART MY

FRIEND. THOU WHOM I HAVE TAKEN FROM THE ENDS OF THE EARTH,
AND CALLED THEE FROM THE CHIEF MEN THEREOF, AND SAID UNTO
THEE, 'THOU ART MY SERVANT; I HAVE CHOSEN THEE, AND NOT CAST
THEE AWAY.,
ACTUALLY, THE BIBLE REVEALS THAT JACOB'S BASIC QUALITIES
OF SOLID WORTH FAR OUTBALANCE SOME OF THOSE EYE-CATCHING
2
WEAKNESSES THAT WE KNOW ABOUT. BUT HE DID HAVE HATE
BESETTING SIN, JUST LIKE YOU AND ME. IN HEBREWS 12: 1 AND
2, YOU REMEMBER HOW THAT SCRIPTURE BEGINS SAYING, "WHEREFORE
SEEING WE ALSO ARE COMPASSED ABOUT WITH SO GREAT A CLOUD OF
WITNESSES, LET US LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT, AND THAT SIN WHICH
DOTH SO EASILY BESET US, AND LET US RUN WITH PATIENCE THE
RACE THAT IS SET BEFORE US."
SOMETIMES YOU AND I ARE NOT WILLING OR FIND OURSELVES
UNABLE TO LAY ASIDE THAT WEIGHT, THAT SIN WHICH BESETS US
AND DRAGS US DOWN AND KEEPS US FROM-RUNNING GOD'S APPOINTED
RACE FOR OU ...
