THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY
Last week we talked about the sixth principle for
keeping free: "Thou shalt not kill." (Exodus 20:13) No
society can last without protecting the right to live for
The seventh principle recognizes what every social
scholar knows well. Society is based upon the home. If
the home goes, freedom goes. I'm not sure the sin of adultery
is any less serious tha- the s in of murder- A- murderer
destroys one life, an aulterer destroys two lives.
The word of God makes it very clear that sexual sin
is serious business.
Exodus 20:14 commands: "Thou shalt not commit
I Corinthians 6:9-10, "Surely you know that the wicked
will not possess God's Kingdom. Do not fool yourselves;
people who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers
or homosexual perverts or who steal or are greedy or are
drunkards or who s anrm others or are thieves -- none of
these will possess God's Kingdom."
Revelation 21:8 calls the roll of unredeemed people
destined for hell: "But cowards, traitors, perverts,
murderers, the immoral, those who practice magic, those
who worship idols, and all liars -- the place for them is
the lake burning with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."
Why? Why does God make this prohibition? Is He
some cosmic kill joy trying to rob us of one of life's
great pleasures? One lady told her husband: "I went to
the doctor and the preacher today and learned that
everything I like is either fattening or immoral!" Listen,
my friend, God is not trying to keep you from being happy.
Just the opposite is true. The only reason God hates sin
is because it hurts people and makes them miserable and He
loves people. Sex is His gift. He made us sexual creatures.
He also made us social and spiritual creatures. If our
sexuality harms the social part of us and the spiritual
part of us then we are not only sinning against Him and
