TO HIS GRACE: WHEN GOD SEEMS UNFAIR: DEALING WITH THE "J" WORD, LUKE 13:1-13




I. INTRO; THERE IS A CATEGORY OF SCRIPTURES AND STATEMENTS OF JESUS THAT
THE SCHOLARS LIKE TO CALL THE HARD SAYINGS OF JESUS.

A. THESE ARE THE CLAIMS, TEACHINGS OF JESUS THAT WE FIND HARD TO ACCEPT OR
UNDERSTAND. THOSE CLAIMS OF CHRIST THAT SEEM OUTRAGEOUS OR SURPRISING
TO US BECAUSE THEY JOLT, SHOCK THE WAY WE LIKE TO PERCEIVE JESUS OR LIKE
TO UNDERSTAND CHRISTIANITY.

1. statements that push on us, challenge us even offend us.

2. We have addressed them as the OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS OF CHRIST MEANING THAT
THEY OFTEN CONFRONT THE WAY WE LIKE TO VIEW CHRIST OR CHRISTIANITY.

B. EXAMPLES OF HIS HARD SAYINGS OR OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS

1. GREATER THINGS SHALL YOU DO THAN I HAVE DONE.

a. that is hard for us to accept that we have the call, commission in our feeble lives to do great
things.

b. we are not comfortable with great things or challenges in our lives. we feel much more
comfortable dealing with our limitations and excuses than HIS GREAT PROMISES TO US

2.UNLESS YOU EAT MY FLESH AND DRINK MY BLOOD

a. meaning unless we take all of Him we do not have any of Him. shattering the comfortable,
traditional idea that giving part of our life to Him. living nice moral lives is enough.

3. IF YOUR EYE OFFENDS YOU, CAUSES YOU TO STUMBLE TEAR IT OUT, CUT OFF
YOUR ARM. IT IS BETTER TO ENTER HEAVEN MAIMED THAN HELL WHOLE.

B. WHAT JESUS IS DOING IS TO BREAK OUR MAN MADE OPINIONS AND THEORIES
ABOUT WHAT WE THINK CHRISTIANITY IS OR SHOULD BE. WHAT IS ACCEPTABLE
AND HOW GOD SHOULD WORK IN OUR LIVES AND HE BREAKS IN WITH REVELATION
OR WHAT IS THE REALITY OF TRUE CHRISTIANITY OR THE TRUE NATURE OF GOD.

1. THERE IS THE HUMAN TENDENCY IS ALL OF US TO CONSTRUCT GOD AND
CHRIST ...
