The Power of the Cross
1 Corinthians 1:17-18
You know, the cross has been used as a fashion symbol. It's been used in the past as kind of a banner upon which people go into war with. The name of God and the name of Jesus have been used to validate wrong things, and often has been misunderstood by an entire population. If anything is true, it is that the cross is a symbol that you and I desperately need to understand. But we need to know more than what this symbol is all about. We need to understand the power of the cross, and so today I want to give you a simple message on the power of the cross. If you will, draw your attention there to I Corinthians 1: 17-18. Paul would write very simply, '' For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the Gospel. Not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, its the power of God.''
Let's pray together. Heavenly Father, we who are in this place long for a touch of Your hand upon our lives. Lord, we bring to You a lot of cares today, and a lot of us are going through some deep, dark times. Some in this place, Father, are going through marital tension. Others Lord, You know are going through financial tension. Some are trying to reevaluate their lives and where they're headed. Some are dealing with just the frustration with their parents, others are dealing with the frustrations with their kids. Father, many of us carry some deep wounds on the inside of our hearts. And Lord, many of us have walked into churches before where we have been hurt, and given false promises. But Lord, we need to hear from You and not anyone else. I'm praying that today You would speak to us about the power of the cross. And Lord, it would not just be for information alone, but You would take us to a spiritual realm, not only in these moments together, but these moments together with You would change our lives forever. So that when we walk from this place, and out of these halls, and into our homes, that people (especially in our own homes) see a difference in our life because of the power of the cross. Jesus, I'm trusting You to speak today. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
How could I talk to you about the power of the cross other than to say that the cross has the power to change your life, both now and forever. There are three basic areas that you and I need to examine today to understand what the Bible says concerning the power of the cross. Now I must not presuppose that everyone knows what happened on the cross. Now for some of you, what I'm about to say is going to be very basic, but let me just say simply to you in explanation, that the cross is not the focus we're talking about. It is not simply a wooden conglomeration, orchestrated for death, but rather the cross we're speaking about is the cross that Jesus died upon. It was the place where He sacrificed His life. ...
