TREATING PEOPLE RIGHT

A YOUNG MAN WAS ACCEPTED AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY. SO AT 18 YEARS
OF AGE, HE WENT OFF TO BOSTON AND EXPERIENCED LIFE AT THAT GREAT
UNIVERSITY. HIS LETTERS AND PHONE CALLS TO HOME INDICATED THAT
HE WAS TAKING ON THE AIRS OF BEING A STUDENT AT SUCH A RENOWN
INSTITUTION. HE BEGAN TO SMOKE A PIPE, DRESSED IVY LEAGUE, AND
ATTEMPTED A BOSTON ACCENT, AND BECAME AN EXPERT ON EVERYTHING.
WHEN HE CAME HOME FOR A VISIT, HIS FATHER WAS READY FOR HIM.
THEY WENT INTO THE STUDY AND SAT DOWN FOR A CONVERSATION. HE HAD
HIS PIPE AND HIS IVY LEAGUE TWEEDS. HIS FATHER OFFERED HIM A
CIGAR. HE WAS REALLY IMPRESSED. HE EXAMINED THE WRAPPER AND
REMARKED, "REALLY, FATHER, THIS IS A $5.00 CIGAR!" HE TALKED
ABOUT ALL THE BENEFITS OF SUCH AN EXPENSIVE CIGAR. HE PUNCHED A
HOLE IN IT AND LIT IT. HE SAID, "SEE HOW LONG IT TOOK TO DRAW
THE SMOKE THROUGH THE CIGAR, DAD, THAT'S BECAUSE IT WAS SO
FINELY CURED AND IS STILL MOIST. YES, THIS IS A GREAT $5.00
CIGAR." HE WATCHED THE SMOKE SWIRL ABOVE HIM.
HIS DAD LOOKED AT HIM, PAUSED JUST A MOMENT AND SAID,
"THAT'S ALL GREAT SON, EXCEPT FOR ONE THING, THAT'S A 75 CENT
CIGAR. I KNOW BECAUSE I CHANGED THE WRAPPER."
HE HAD HIS SON DEAD IN HIS SIGHTS! JUST BECAUSE HE HAD GONE OFF
TO HARVARD, CHANGED HIS STYLE OF DRESS AND HAD LEARNED A FEW
THINGS, HE WAS STILL HIS SON, AND HIS AIRS WOULD GET HIM NOWHERE
IN LIFE.
