GROWING CLOSER AND GOING DEEPER WITH GOD
Series Verse: BUT GROW IN THE GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE OF
OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST (2 PETER 3:18)
Intro: Have you ever wished to yourself that you were
a more disciplined person?
More disciplined in EATING
More disciplined in EXERCISE
More disciplined in HOUSE CLEANING
More disciplined in STUDYING
More disciplined in your SCHEDULE
More disciplined in your SPENDING HABITS (impulse
More disciplined in your DEVOTION LIFE (Bible Study,
prayer, meditation, quiet-time)
Ex. How often have you felt convicted to have a daily
quiet-time and you said to yourself, "I'm going to
start setting my alarm and getting up 30 minutes
earlier to have a quiet time alone with the Lord."
And you did it forà2 WHOLE DAYS! Then you began to
fudge and then eventually you just gave up completely!
Would you agree that we in the Western World, and
especially we Americans, know very little about the
matter of PERSONAL DISCIPLINE. We have to a very great
extent been a very pampered society and we are pretty
spoiled. Rigid personal discipline is simply not an
important value in our culture...at least not as it is
in some eastern cultures.
Unfortunately, Western Christianity, is heavily
influenced by Western Culture, and as a result even
those of us who claim the name of Christ and possess
the Holy Spirit, teach and practice very little
Ex. I remember the first time I suggested to a
church that we set aside a specific day as a time of
corporate prayer and FASTING... The response I go was
absolutely shocking. No one in that entire church had
ever given serious consideration to the matter of
FASTING. They evidently thought that FASTING was
something that was only done in Bible days... (surely
fasting went out with concubines and crucification)
