A little girl was attending Sunday school for the very first time. It was Christmas and she eagerly listened to the teacher tell the story of the birth of God's Son. She sat quietly as she heard about the angels, wise men, and the shepherds. Then the teacher added, "And they shall call His name Jesus." She looked at the person sitting beside her and said, "Why did they have to name the baby a swearword?" It was the first time that she had heard the name Jesus except in swearing.

If you listen to some people, you would think that the name Jesus and God were nothing more than swearwords. Some people seem to think that God's first name is by and His last name is damn. The name of Jesus is everything but a swearword. I join with the songwriter in saying that:

Jesus is the sweetest name I know,
And He's just the same as His lovely name,
And that's the reason why I love Him so;
Oh, Jesus is the sweetest name I know.

As we continue looking at the Ten Commandments, today I want us to look at the third commandment which addresses how the name of God is used. We read in Exodus 20:7:

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Let's consider the third commandment and learn how we are to use God's name. Let's began by first considering:

1. THE SACREDNESS OF USING GOD'S NAME

It has been said that there are more than 300 names for God in the Bible. The third commandment tells us the name of God is special and sacred. George Macdonald wrote, "The Name of the Lord should be a precious jewel in the cabinet of our heart, to be taken out only at great times and with loving care." Why should we treat the name of the Lord with such loving care?

First, there is:

A) The Revelation We See in God's Name

I fellow called the operator and asked for the number of a Jennifer Smith in Richmond, Virginia. The operator said, "There are multiple listings for Jennifer Smith in Richmond. Do you have a street name?" The fellow hesitated for a moment and then said, "Well, uh, most people call me Bubba."

As you look at God you find that He is called by many names. Lehman Strauss said, "What the telescope is to the scientist, the name of God is to His children." The names of God are a revelation of Himself. Each name of God is a further revelation of who and what He is. As Herbert Lockyer stated, "But if we would know what God says about Himself, it is necessary to study the revelation found ...
